Portrait Photography by Gordon O.

Today's lesson was on 'Portrait Photography'. It wasn't as difficult as yesterday's lesson but still involved a bit of thinking, especially when it came to finding and setting up the ideal background.
I had a bit of help from Doctor in order to achieve the portrait on the left.
First, the subject was asked to sit near a window so the sunlight could serve as the primary source of light. In Portrait Photography, the use of flash is not encouraged in order to prevent the shadow of the subject from being cast onto the background. Next, the black background was set up in order to hide the activity behind the subject. With the background now simplified, and the activity now blocked out, a piece of white cardboard was held by Doctor diagonally below the subject's face in order to get more light on his face. The subject was then asked to pose for the picture with his shoulders slightly tilted in order to produce an appealing photo. After that, I went ahead and zoomed in, making sure the image was in focus before I took the picture.
I can honestly say this picture turned out great. The extra lighting produced by the cardboard made the picture look even better.

  1. I like how you simplified the background. You subject is exposed to light on one side of there face and not the other. That clearly pointed out what side your reflector was placed on. Could have used on on the other side.

    1. I personally think it looks okay without a second reflector but thanks a lot for the suggestion anyway, Evans.

  2. Nice photo Gordon. The background is simplified and the rule of thirds is shown here. Also the exposure here is perfect. Also i like were you put the reflectors in this photo.

  3. This is a very good post, Gordon, and you outlined clearly how you achieved this nice final picture. I hope you will continue to keep in mind these guidelines of reflector use whenever you take other portraits during your own photography after the class is over. Well done. -DL

  4. I like how the light is reflected on his face showing more quality and the light and creases on the background because it works well with the picture.
