The rule of thirds is a rule that helps many photos to look more symmetrical and in turn making the picture better. The rule states that when you are taking a picture you make a imaginary grid or a real grid depending on the camera that you use in taking your photo to help make the photo better and emphasis on different things in the photo.
In one of my pictures i am taking a photo of a chimney. I alined it along the left line on the grid, and I made one of the center points the ornament on top of the chimney. because of that the chimney seems to stick out more than everything else in the scene.
